00:02Ted and I hit it off right away.
00:06I had never really dated anybody like that.
00:09And then I found out about him cheating on me.
00:13He was videoing
00:14himself having sex with other women.
00:18He grabs me by the throat.
00:20He pushed me down the stairs.
00:22He did the one thing that he knew would hurt me.
00:25I remember blacking out.
00:27When I woke up,
00:28the car and my child were gone.
00:31He's definitely very intelligent.
00:33Seems almost like he's one step ahead.
00:35A year and a half in
00:36and I did not know that he was someone else.
00:38There's Ted.
00:41and two dead people.
00:42I remember thinking, oh God,
00:44I'm living with a murderer.
00:46A bizarre twist
00:47developed today in the mysterious death of billionaire banker Edmond Safra.
00:51A male nurse
00:52now has confessed to setting the fire that killed one of the world's wealthiest men.
00:56Maher, a former Green Beret
00:58once hailed as a hero, is now viewed as a villain.
02.33We've all been so horribly mistreated and abused by this man.
07.13And I don't want him to get away with it anymore.
10.59Ted had hired a hitman.
12.63Apparently,
13.53there was a plan to get rid of my body in Mexico.
16.83He hired me to kill his wife.
18.89If you're going to kill somebody, you do it yourself.
21.53But to hire somebody?
25.53He's a pussy.

00:04since 1983.
00:07We met in Las Vegas
00:09and I was actually set up
00:11with him on a date.
00:14He was really not someone that I was
00:18immediately attracted to.
00:20He was a little on the arrogant side,
00:22a little cocky.
00:23But he was good-looking
00:25and tall and funny.
00:28So that's how we just started dating.
00:32We were very happy.
00:33We were madly in love.
00:37I think it was several months
00:39before I moved in.
00:43And then, um,
00:44I had found out that he had
00:45cheated on me.
00:47We got into a huge fight
00:49the next morning when he came home
00:51and I decided to leave him.
00:54He was devastated.
00:57Right before I moved out,
00:58he actually pulled me into the bedroom
01.60and he had a gun in his hand.
04.50And he said that he was going
06.80to kill himself
08.50if I didn't stay with him.
11.80and he put the bullet in the gun.
14.40One bullet.
16.10And he held it to his head
18.70and he pulled the trigger.

10.69I'll stay.
11.29I'll stay.
12.39Don't do this. I'll stay.
14.69So I stayed.
16.59Um,
17.69you know, things just
19.09never really seemed to get any better.
22.69It was 1985.
26.19we moved to New York.
28.49when we got into an argument,
31.39kind of like the same fight that we always had,
33.99you know, about
34.89him working too much and never being around.
37.79and saying things to me like,
39.89you know, you're stupid,
41.39you're fat.
42.49you're lazy.
44.19You know,
44.99I got that a lot.
46.39And that's when I was like,
48.89I'm out of here. I'm leaving.
51.49I started to walk out to leave,
53.49and that's when he came
55.49and
56.49I was at the top of the stairs
58.19and he shoved me.
59.79And I went down the flight of stairs.
03.59He came down to the bottom of the stairs
06.19and grabbed me and
07.89took my head and slammed it
09.09across the concrete area.
11.69and I finally got away from him.
14.39I had my keys right there.
17.39So I grabbed them real quick,
19.39and I got in my car.
21.29And he was yelling whatever at me,
23.59and he got in front of the car
26.49and he wouldn't let me move.

00:06That's when I took off
00:07into a little bit of a different direction
00:09and I got away from him.
00:11Scared, naive, young.
00:13I didn't go to the police,
00:16but I did find a house
00:18that would take battered women in.
00:20I stayed there for maybe two nights.
00:24It just kind of got worse after that.
00:26I was like, that's it.
00:27I'm done.
00:28I'm not doing this any longer.
00:30And I decided
00:31to go back to Las Vegas.
00:34And he and I had gotten to the point where
00:37he was not upset with me
00:39about leaving him anymore.
00:41So he was going to help me
00:42drive back out to Las Vegas.
00:45I said, I was going to drive first,
00:47so we got out on the highway
00:49and he said,
00:51Hey, I brought you something.
00:53I said, what?
00:54And he opened up his hand
00:56and he had a pill in his hand.
00:59And I was like, what's that?
01:00And he goes, it's speed.
01:02It'll help you stay awake.
01:03So, you know,
01:05I was in my 20s, I took it.
01:08I don't know what he gave me,
01:09but it certainly wasn't
01:11something that was going to help me stay awake.
01:16The next thing I knew,
01:18it was two and a half days later.
01:21I was in a bathtub in a hotel.
01:25The bathtub was full

00:00There is a murder mystery
00:01to report to you tonight.
00:02The victim, an elusive billionaire banker.
00:04It is unfolding at the favorite playground of the rich and famous,
00:08Monaco.
00:11So much of what happened that morning
00:13is so unbelievable.
00:15It only begins to make sense when you drill down
00:18into the moment by moment.
00:21The first thing the police realize
00:23is they get a call from the concierge
00:25at a swanky building
00:27who says that the nurse to Edmond Safra,
00:30one of the continent's wealthiest men,
00:32has been attacked.
00:33He is in the lobby.
00:35He has collapsed.
00:36There is blood.
00:37He says he's been attacked
00:39by attackers
00:40who are probably still upstairs
00:42and so is Edmond Safra.
00:43Come quick.
00:45There's also, oddly, some type of smoke.
00:47A fire is going on.
00:49It's not quite clear what that is.
00:51But the police respond.
00:53They're there promptly.
00:55But they can't go up there
00:57until they know the building is clear
01:00of assassins, terrorists,
01:01whoever did this.

00:02Edmond Safra and a nurse
00:03are in fact in the penthouse.
00:05They have locked themselves in a bedroom
00:07because of these assassins
00:09that are somewhere at large.
00:12They have the door closed,
00:14they have a cell phone.
00:15Some of the people who Edmond Safra's
00:17talking to on the phone
00:18are telling them,
00:18you should leave.
00:20And he was hesitant to do so.
00:22He was I think concerned
00:23that there were still intruders and attackers
00:25that were in the building.
00:27The police, it is clear,
00:28do not spend an awful lot of time
00:30worrying
00:31about these two people in the bathroom.
00:34In the meantime, the fire is spreading.
00:36The smoke gets carried up through the ducts
00:38and gets circulated through the apartment's
00:40air conditioning systems.
00:42It clearly took north of an hour
00:45for them to feel like it was safe
00:47for the firefighters to go in.
00:50And they waited too long.
00:51In that amount of time,
00:53the nurse and Edmond expired
00:54from smoke inhalation.

00:00One of the world's richest bankers
00:1.died today
00:2.in a violent and mysterious attack
00:4.on his home in Monaco.
00:06Witnesses say two masked men
00:07armed with knives
00:09invaded the Riviera penthouse
00:11of Edmond Safra.
00:13Safra managed to hide,
00:14but the men then set a fire
00:15that killed him and one other person.
00:18The attackers escaped.
00:21The news of Edmond Safra's death
00:23came as a global shock.
00:25People to this day
00:27will recall where they were
00:28when they heard this news.
00:34By the 1990s, Edmond Safra
00:36becomes stricken with Parkinson's disease.
00:39He's only 60.
00:41So there was a team of several nurses
00:43who were there pretty much 24/7.
00:46Vivian Torrente and Ted Maher
00:48were among the crew of nurses
00:49who were looking after Mr. Safra.
00:52It was December 3rd.
00:54I woke up, it was a Friday morning,
00:56and I heard my father get a phone call
00:58and he was screaming.
01:00He didn't tell me
01:01what was happening,
01:03um, but that he said that something happened to mom
01:05and we would have to travel to France.
01:08I knew something bad happened.
01:10Um, to be honest, I really did
01:12feel that my mom did pass away.
01:17That was the morning.
01:25Once it's clear
01:26that they've got two people dead,
01:28this is a serious investigation they need to understand what happened.
01:31Well, guess what?
01:32There are only three people in that penthouse that night.
01:35Two of them are now dead.
01:37So all they've got
01:38is a nurse named Ted Maher,
01:41who is sitting in a Monaco hospital
01:44with stab wounds to the abdomen.

27.52He sustained serious wounds

41.74was deluged with stories that this had been done
45.14by the Russian mafia,

00:01At first,
00:01the story was that two masked men
00:03had broken into the penthouse,
00:05stabbed Safra's male nurse with a knife,
00:07then started the fire.
00:09But this weekend,
00:10investigators say they've found
00:12no signs of forced entry,
00:14no signs of any intruders,
00:16and no evidence of guns.
00:17So the only account of the intruders
00:19comes from the male nurse
00:20who claims he saw them.
00:22There's no obvious scene of a struggle.
00:25There's no evidence that anybody else was there.
00:28But the real moment
00:31that jolted the authorities is
00:33there's nothing on the cameras.
00:35Any of them.
00:37There's closed circuit cameras
00:38everywhere on that building.
00:41And you can tell that they're beginning
00:43to move the focus away from
00:45mysterious ninjas
00:46who have disappeared
00:48to let's focus a little bit more on Ted.

00:01Ted Maher's story starts to fall apart.
00:05Finally on Monday, December 6th,
00:06he essentially confesses.
00:08Ted basically says,
00:10Screw it, I'll tell you the actual truth.
00:12There were no ninjas.
00:13I did all this myself.
00:16Ted Maher from the beginning seemed spectacularly out of place
00:20in the middle of a scandal involving a death,
00:23a billionaire banker,
00:24Monaco.
00:26This is a guy who's from
00:27a small town in rural New York.
00:31He's married, father of three,
00:33neonatal nurse.
00:35My mother was a school bus driver,
00:36my father was a telephone repairman,
00:38and uh, we didn't have a whole lot growing up.
00:40Anything that we wanted to get,
00:41we had to work for.
00:43Ted was overwhelmed
00:45by the display of Edmond Safra's wealth.
00:48And he came to believe
00:50that if he did something heroic,
00:53he would be rewarded.
00:55He says that he wounded himself,
00:58he set the fire,
00.00that he had done it as part of a desire
01.80to be seen more favorably in the household,
04.90that he would fend off these intruders
06.60and be greeted as a hero
08.00and thus secure his place going forward.
10.20An American man
11.40has been sentenced to 10 years in prison
13.00in what's being called Monaco's trial of the century.
15.60On Monday, Ted Maher
16.80was convicted of setting a fire
18.80that killed billionaire Edmond Safra
20.00and another person three years ago.

00:00the conditions in the jail.
00:02It was better than a day's end.
00:04I mean, this was better than a Hilton Express.
00:08Full bed, refrigerator,
00:09food brought in on a tray,
00:12and a view of the Mediterranean.
00:15So, I mean, if you got to do 10 years,
00:17this is better than most places in the US,
00:19I suspect.
00:21And then in like a matter of months,
00:24there's this story that goes out
00:25out of the South of France.
00:27Ted Maher, killer of billionaire, escapes from prison.
00:31Ted Maher cut the bars
00:33on that window of his cell.
00:35And then using a rope made of trash bags,
00:38climbed out, scaled that wall
00:41and escaped.
00:43And then he does it in this way
00:45that's like straight out of a B movie.
00:48He and his thief cut through
00:49the bars of their cell.
00:52They tie together trash bags,
00:54which leads you to wonder how
00:56a French prisoner gets like 85 trash bags,
00:59but whatever, he did it.
01:01And then they used this to
01:03scale down the side of this prison
01:05in the dead of night
01:07in a driving rainstorm.

00:01I'm in France and don't speak French.
00:04I don't have any money.
00:05I don't have any ID.
00:06And oh, by the way, I don't know a soul.
00:09You get the sense
00:10ever so slightly that Ted hadn't really thought this through.
00:13He goes to a hotel, he says, I'm sorry,
00:15I've been in a car accident.
00:16I don't have my credit card,
00:19but I'll call my sister in America, which he then does,
00:21and she'll give you a credit card number,
00:23which she does, and he's suddenly in a hotel room.
00:26The story was,
00:28Excuse me, sir, my car is broken down on the autoroute.
00:30Can you allow me to make a collect call
00:32to my family so that I can get get a room
00:34here for the night until I can, you know, get some identification?
00:37So he starts making calls.
00:39And one of his calls is to a priest
00:42who apparently has been holding money for him
00:45that he uses in prison.
00:47Father Ball, I'm free right now.
00:49I need to recover the money that my family has given you
00:52so I can make safe passage to US territory.
00:55Can you help me?
00:56So Ted reaches this priest and it's like 4:00 in the morning.
00:59And the priest says,
01:00Please call me back tomorrow.
01:01So, Ted calls back like after dawn.
01:05I said, Father Ball, this is Ted.
01:07He goes, the man you want is on the phone.
01:16I mean, I'm in shock.
01:17I can't believe he's passing the phone over to the police.
01:20I hung up.
01:26I didn't have enough time to get on my
01:28my jockeys and and put on my pants
01:30and go downstairs and I opened up the door
01:31and there was five French nationals waiting for me.

13.69I had just started in the oil fields
16.39hauling crude oil
18.19out of Love Lady, Texas.
20.73and he comes running up
22.83with sunglasses,
24.63helmet,
25.43you know, our PPEs on and
27.33just had this crazy wide
30.43grin on him
31.63like, who, you know.
33.43Who are you?
34.13Where'd you come from?
35.03And I was like, okay,
36.73this guy is a little too friendly.
39.43So he went back to his truck,
41.73but every day
43.23that I delivered a oil down to Houston,
46.33he would be there.
48.03So it started from there.
50.73He introduced himself
52.33as John Lawrence Green.
55.13And I didn't think nothing of it.
58.63I think I was in my mid-40s
01.73and I realized he was a lot older.
04.33have kind of crazy white hair.
06.43Mad scientist looking
08.03kind of thing.
09.03To me, I wasn't attracted to him.
10.83It was his charm.
12.43I think later that swooned me over.
15.33He always tried to,
16.33you know, some of the stupidest jokes,
18.23but they were funny because of the way he was telling them. I had never really dated anybody like that. Like, wow, somebody's decent. Somebody nice. Wow, what a change, you know? Later, he talked me into moving in with him. I just felt secure and safe and the future was looking very bright. In the beginning, we were always like hip to hip, you know? And then we hardly ever got to see each other. And that was kind of weird because I noticed uh he would work nights if I was working days or I worked nights and then he come to days. And I'm like, okay, well, what's going on, you know?
03.53The red flags were there.
05.03I just uh
05.73I guess I was so enamored with it,
07.93I just didn't think to pay attention to the signs I was seeing.

00:01When Ted and I first met,
00:02he did not introduce himself
00:04as Ted Maher.
00:05He introduced himself as John Green.
00:08And that went on for about a year and a half.
00:11I did not know that he was uh someone else.
00:15I later learned a lot.
00:17And he showed me the book that he had published.
00:21And I'm like, man,
00:22that's kind of a crazy story.
00:24And um, he said,
00:26would you be upset if I told you it might be true?
00:28And I'm like,
00:29uh, yeah, I'd be a little upset.
00:32I sure would.
00:34He said, it's about me.
00:36And this happened.
00:37But I I'm innocent.
00:40I'm like, here we are a year and a half in
00:42and I don't even know who I'm with.
00:45That's weird.
00:482016 on my birthday,
00:51we were meeting up at the hotel,
00:52no big deal.
00:54And so I got in the shower
00:55and he kept running back outside.
00:58And I was like, what are you doing?
00.60And so I followed him out there.
02.10He was on another phone,
04.00a track phone.
05.50And I didn't say nothing.
07.10I just kept my mouth shut.
08.20I said, oh, he's up to something.
10.20And then he left again.
11.40And I was like,
12.80is is something wrong?
14.10I mean, what's going on?
16.20He wouldn't not answer me.
18.20And I said, look, this ain't going to work.
20.60He said, that's fine, I'm leaving.
22.90And he got in the truck.
25.40So I walked all the way around.
28.10I'm sitting in the front seat of the truck.
29.80It's running.
30.40And I'm just sitting there like,
32.00you know, can we talk about this?
33.40What's going on, you know?
35.10And he grabs me by the throat.
38.70picks me up
40.10and pushes me out.
42.90I see the look in his eyes.
44.70They were piercing.
48.20He came within a paper thin hair
50.80of running me over that trailer.
54.20And I remembered reading the book
56.50and realizing,

00:01That's the first time he'd ever
00:03put any hands on me, ever.
00:06I mean, he's yelled and stuff
00:07and carried on, but nothing,
00:10nothing of that nature.
00:12That's when I really saw
00:13the violent side of him.
00:16And somebody in the hotel
00:17would called the cops,
00:18so the cops showed up,
00:20and I wasn't going to say anything.
00:23I think that's the mentality
00:25of victims.
00:26They they tend to
00:28not want to cause any more problems
00:30because you don't know what's going to happen.
00:32That's the second person that I actually
00:34had dated that um
00:36put their hands on me.
00:38And I was so berated so long
00:41that I just think that I
00:42didn't know any better.
00:49Sorry.
00:52I've been berated so badly
00:54and talked down to so much
00:55and beat on that I just
00:57didn't think any better of myself
00:59to get myself out of that situation.
04.50And then I got to digging around in his truck
07.50and I found the track phones.
10.00I got into the phone
12.50and um I called everyone he
15.20came in touch with.
17.80Ted had to have more than
19.20just one person at a time.
21.80And he uh
23.50supposedly told me he he broke everything off,
26.30but he didn't.
27.20It it just kept dragging out
28.80through the whole course
30.50of our uh relationship.
32.30And I don't think it was just that
34.20he couldn't be with one person.
35.70I think it was
37.50the challenge of hiding it.
42.20And I didn't know at the time
43.50that he had already met Dr. Kim.

12.20He liked skiing.
14.30It's just like he was a chameleon.
16.50Who wouldn't want a best friend?
18.50You know, 'cause that's the way
19.50he came off.
23.50When I met Ted,
25.50he came into the practice
27.80to have a biopsy done.
29.60And I sent him to another physician.
33.60But then we still talked
36.30and texted back and forth
38.30and the next year
39.90we started dating.
43.30It was just a nice relationship at the beginning.
48.40I knew that John Green
50.10was his name now,
52.40but he always was Ted.
54.10That's the way he wanted to be
55.50known to people.
57.90I thought his ex-wife
59.90was making his life miserable
01.40and that's why he got his other name.
04.80It was
06.10a couple years after
07.80he had moved in and we were dating
09.20that he proposed.
11.50He staged the whole thing
13.20while we were up skiing
15.40and he got this big fancy ring.
18.30That was a bit of a
20.00uncomfortable spot for me
21.20'cause I definitely
22.10had to warm up to the idea of getting married.
25.50I really didn't
27.00have any meaningful relationships.
31.30I didn't see myself getting married.
33.50That just wasn't me.
35.40But nonetheless,
36.50I did.

00:02When Ted came back down here,
00:05he apologized
00:06and said that he went into a
00:08alcohol and drug rehab program.
00:12And,
00:13you know, he promised me
00:14it would never happen again
00:16and unfortunately, I took him back.
00:20I just never trusted him after that.
00:26Ted
00:27kept on saying
00:28he would like to get money
00:30for his 2010 Toyota.
00:34But he said he would get
00:36more money from the insurance
00:38for the car than he would if he sold it outright.
00:42Well,
00:42he went to El Paso
00:45and then he called me and told me his car was stolen.
00:49And I knew the moment that he told me that story that it was a lie.
00:55Once he got to the point
00:57where he was willing to lie, cheat, and steal,
01:00that was the end of our relationship.
01:03What else did he lie and cheat about?
01:07I knew at that point
01:09I had to somehow get my dogs and myself away from him.
01:17He disappears.
01:19And then, I think it was April,
01:22I uh, came in and it was payday.
01:25And I looked in the drawer
01:28and my check is not there.
01:31And then I get a call
01:34from the bank that he's trying
01:35to write himself a check for 44,000.
01:41What the hell is wrong with you?

00:26I did not write him a check

00:30In fact, he shouldn't even have
00:32my checkbook. He has stolen it.
00:35They call the police.
00:37He's waiting there for his 44,000.
00:41And they come up to him and say,
00:42are you John Green?
00:44And he's like, no.
00:47And then he realizes,
00:48I guess the gig is up,

00:52and then gets in a scuffle
00:54with the police officer.
00:56and drives away.

01:05He didn't realize that because of his phone,

00:01I had just been assigned to the crime beat
00:03and part of my job
00:04was to go through the jail records.
00:07And usually it's, you know, DWIs,
00:09domestic violence,
00:10you know, you're kind of run of the mill crimes.
00:12So going through that,
00:13I came across Greg Markham
00:15who was charged with conspiracy
00:17to commit first degree murder.
00:18And I was like, that's kind of out of the ordinary.
00:21Murder for hire is not something I'd ever seen
00:23on that list before.
00:25So then I go scroll to the next person
00:27and it's John Green
00:28and they have his mugshot and his photo.
00:31And I was like, this is the dognapping guy.
00:34We need to follow up on this
00:35and and find out what's going on.
00:39Mr. Green, I can see you, I know you're present,
00:41but can you say your name for the record?
00:44John Green.
00:45Thank you.
00:46You may be seated.
00:48It was probably one of the more unique trials
00:50I've ever covered.
00:50And I've covered several trials
00:51here in town over the years.
00:54You kind of wonder like,
00:55who are these people?
00:57What is really happening here?
01:00The most interesting part of the case
01:02was when Dr. Lark
01:04testified.
01:06This is a person who,
01:08this was probably one of the worst things
01:09that ever happened to her.
01:11She seemed kind of scared.
01:13She didn't seem like she was excited to testify.
01:16What was your understanding of
01:19the type of harm that may come your way?
01:22I was told that somebody
01:24would try to end my life.
01:27I think Dr. Lark was nervous.
01:29I think it was very emotional for her.
01:32But at the end of the day,
01:33this wasn't the case where she was going to be
01:35the star witness.
01:36She was the focal point of it.
01:39But the star witness was Greg Markham.

00:03My biggest concern
00:05was who we were having to rely on.
00:09At the end of the day, it was going to be
00:11those 12 jurors going to be able to look
00:13at Greg Markham sitting on the witness stand,
00:15hearing what he says
00:16and believe that it's credible
00:19that John Green
00:20was giving him this money
00:22as a down payment, so to speak,
00:24to kill Dr. Lark.
00:27Mr. Markham,
00:28there's been some things in your past that haven't been quite honest.
00:32Yes, I have
00:33I have done things in my past, yes.
00:36The whole defense focus was on
00:38why Greg Markham is a liar.
00:40And so it was just
00:42nit picking what he did or didn't do
00:45and trying to pick apart his story.
00:49regarding what you you claim you were promised.
00:52The main thing was
00:54the truck,
00:55the trailer and the 10,000.
00:58But out of all those things that you were promised,
01:01you only got bonded out
01:04because of the down payment.
01:06Correct, his payment, yeah.
01:08We have to corroborate everything that we can
01:11to verify that what he's saying is truthful
01:16because otherwise,
01:18how are we going to prove this?

00:01They asked questions,
00:03I gave them my best response.
00:05If you didn't find me credible,
00:07then okay.
00:08Ask her where did she keep her gun.
00:11How many people knew that it was
00:12going to be in the console?
00:13Only her and him.
00:16Did John Green tell you anything else
00:17about Dr. Laura's house?
00:18Yes, I I he described it
00:20in great detail.
00:21I I believe I drew a
00:23a diagram.
00:24You could look at pictures of the house,
00:26look at the floor plan.
00:27He could describe it perfectly.
00:29So, someone had to tell him.
00:31He told me that the double doors in the back
00:34is the easiest way to get into the house.
00:36That's how he got in
00:37when he went and got the dogs.
00:39Why would someone tell you
00:41how to gain access to your home?
00:43Why would someone tell you
00:44how to cut power to your house?
00:46Why would someone tell you
00:47where your safe is
00:47and how to access it?
00:49And what was in the safe was accurate.
00:50There should be cash
00:52and the titles to the vehicles
00:54were in there.
00:55He was given all these details
00:57that if you'd never gone to the property,
01:00you're certainly not going to know.
01:02He knew
01:04what I kept in my safe
01:07in the the bedroom.
01:08I guess he planned to get me
01:09to open up that too.
01:11But he knew where everything
01:13was in the house.
01:15Have you ever seen a fentanyl
01:16overdose before?
01:18Yes.
01:19I have.
01:21They they could turn blue in the lips.
01:22They don't they don't breathe.
01:24They uh...
01:26their life escapes them.
01:29Did you ever seriously contemplate
01:30doing that to Dr.?
01:31Never.
01:32Never would I do that to a human being.
01:35I think he showed remorse.
01:37Even if you can say,
01:38well, I was never really going to do it.
01:40That's easy to say later, right?
01:42The reality of what had been asked to do
01:44and who John Green really was
01:47became very real in that courtroom.
01:49He was so dead set on having
01:51something done to her.
01:53There's no doubt in my mind that
01:54if he got out on his own
01:56that he would have killed her.

00:03John Green was a desperate man.
00:08A desperate man that
00:10was sitting in jail because
00:11he had already taken a vehicle
00:14with rescue dogs,
00:15broken into the house.
00:17He had broken into the office,
00:19and he had problems.
00:22And all of his problems would go away
00:25if there was no more
00:28Kim Lark.
00:33What he wanted was
00:34Kim Lark dead.
00:36Thank you.
00:40Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,
00:42at this time,
00:43I'm about to ask if you wish to
00:45begin deliberations tonight.
00:47I loved doing jury trials
00:49until the jury's deliberating.
00:51And then you realize
00:52you've lost control.
00:54The jury could think there's reasonable doubt
00:56and they could come back not guilty
00:58and you need to be prepared for that.
01.89If Ted gets out,
03.59he has nothing left to lose.
06.93I was scared to death.
13.54All right, we are now on record.
15.44This is the matter of State of New Mexico
17.84versus John Lawrence Green.
18.67I've been advised
20.00that the jury has reached a verdict.

00:00At this time,
00:00I'm going to ask all parties
00:02to please rise.
00:03We find the defendant, John Green,
00:06guilty
00:07of criminal solicitation
00:08to commit first degree murder
00:09as charged in count one.
00:12In this case,
00:13the jury came back guilty.
00:15So sigh of relief for Dr. Alark,
00:17disbelief by John Green.
00:23All I could do was smile.
00:27I think Ted was surprised.
00:31I don't think Ted thought
00:32he was going to be found guilty at all.
00:35Ted believes his own lies.
00:38And I think he thought he was going to get off.
00:41He got the maximum.
00:43The judge told him
00:45that he showed absolutely
00:47no remorse
00:49and that he was afraid for my life.
00:52And just as he was being
00:54led out,
00:56he says to me,
00:57Kimmy, I still love you.
00:59You're so full of shit.
01.30Excuse me.
02.00But that's what I thought.
03.20I still loved you.
04.50Yeah, right.
05.80What the hell is wrong with you?
09.50What a coward.
11.50If you're going to kill somebody,
12.50you do it yourself.
13.60But to hire somebody,
16.50He's a pussy.

00:01When I think about Ted,
00:03I think what a sorry
00:04son of a bitch he is.
00:06that he's preyed on people
00:08his whole life
00:10and is willing to lie,
00:12cheat, and steal.
00:14Ted did not take any responsibility
00:17for anything he's done,
00:19including the stuff in Monte Carlo.
00:22I think Ted has just gone
00:24from one con to the next.
00:26Unless you're in a relationship with this man
00:29and you know how he really is,
00:33you'd think he's a great guy.
00:34You know?
00:35Everybody loved him
00:37because he was funny.
00:37He was tall, blonde, good-looking.
00:41When he's really a monster.
00:43He really is.
00:45He just happened to get caught this last time.
00:47What if he had not got caught?
00:49Somebody else would have died.
00:52The hardest thing that I've ever had to do
00:54is not just survive this,
00:57but to give peace of mind
00:58to myself.
01.80I forgave that man.
07.30God have mercy on his soul
09.00for how he's treated all of us like this.
11.80It's awful.
