04.49He was a person who
06.89is kind of existentially and emotionally numb,
10.39who needs
11.69the terror of the moment of killing.
14.59He needs to see the fire of terror
17.49in the woman's eyes
18.79at the verge of snuffing out her soul
21.19for him to be aroused.
32.51There might be other serial killers that are as bad
34.88as Rodney Alcala,
35.91but when you think about the innocence
37.81of the people that he murdered,
39.01as well as the pure depravity
40.41of the way he did it,
42.08there's nobody worse than Rodney Alcala.

58.58You know,
59.28he is somebody that never should have had the opportunity

03.28The California justice system
05.08could have kept him in custody.
06.58The California parole boards

11.48They decided to release him instead,
13.08and it's a tragedy.
14.08It really is.
14.98It's heartbreaking.

00:06I was actually born in Rochester, New York.
00:08We moved to California when I was nine.
00:11California was a big shock after living in conservative New York.
00:15It was uh much more fast-paced.
00:18But it was very exciting to move to Hollywood, you know,
00:21to move to the glamour capital of the world, you know.
00:28When I got to be a young teenager,
00:31Hollywood was the place to go, you know.
00:33It was the mid-sixties.
00:35It was just populated with teenagers,
00:38runaways from all over the world.
00:42Everybody was very strongly in the beliefs that if
00:45everybody loved everybody, nothing bad would ever happen.
00:52We really opened ourselves to everyone.
00:55I think over the years we found that that was a big mistake.
00:58We were a bunch of sheep and the wolves came in, you know.
02.55In 1965, Morgan was 13 years old.
07.25But she looked a lot younger.

02.92that they couldn't figure out what it was.
04.80turned out to be like an abscess
06.99in the bottom of my stomach that they had to remove.
09.59So I was always extremely underweight.
11.32I never caught up with my size or my weight.
14.39So I was looked like a small child.
17.39I actually wore children's clothing
19.39and I really didn't realize
20.99what a target that would make me
23.29from somebody who
25.29really like to go after children.
31.70I'm Bobby Chacon.
32.69I was an FBI special agent from 1987
35.09to 2014.
37.29Clearly, it was a case of
38.59a compulsion to commit murder on his part.
40.49And so, if it was a child,
41.99it was a child,
42.79he didn't seem to draw the line.
45.40Sometimes we see a serial killer
47.79only want college-aged females or certain things like that.
51.59In Alcala's case, he really didn't have a victim profile.
54.09He was very varied,
55.59which makes him more difficult to catch.
01.59From the age of 13,
03.19Morgan Rowan began hanging out at nightclubs on the Sunset Strip.
07.40Some of which catered to teenage revelers.
18.40In in the beginning,
19.50the club I went to the most was called the Hullabaloo Club.
22.90I eventually worked there.
24.40We didn't get paid because we were all underage.
26.50We were 14, 15, 16.

00:04Um, my friend and I walked down
00:06to see what was going on around the club.
00:08It was broad daylight.
00:09It was probably 3:00 in the afternoon.
00:11And the only people there
00:13were two older guys
00:15talking to each other in the parking lot.
00:18And my friend said to me,
00:19Hey, that's Rod Alcala.
00:21I had heard of him.
00:23My girlfriend had a bit of a crush on him.
00:26He had a big presence.
00:27A lot of people knew him,
00:28so his name came up a lot.
00:31He was flirting.
00:33He would look over and smile.
00:35He would look over and wink.
00:37Eventually he kind of waved us over,
00:39come over here.
00:40So we walked over there
00:42and we just stood listening to the two of them talk.
00:45My girlfriend saw somebody else
00:47and, you know, ran off to meet him
00:49and I was standing there alone with the two men.
00:52It used to be said that through these portals
00:55passed the world's most beautiful girls.
00:59I wanted his attention.
01:00So I reached over
01:02and I lightly scratched his arm with my fingernails.
01:06He put his arm around me,
01:08pulled me close,
01:09laughed.
01:11I liked that attention.
01:12I was a little girl, you know.
01:16So I did it again.
01:18This time when he hugged me,
01:19he kind of squeezed me tight like,
01:22stop.
01:22Don't do that again, basically.
01:25And after a few minutes,
01:26I got really stupid and did it again.
01:28So
01:29his friend turned and walked away.
01:32And as soon as his friend turned his back,
01:35he grabbed my arm
01:37and he dragged me to the back of the nightclub.

00:11He was just so angry.
00:13And when we got to the back of the club,
00:17I'm not sure what he did.
00:18Um,
00:20if I had to guess, I'd say
00:22he slammed my head against the the wall,
00:25um, because I went unconscious.
00:31I don't know if he did anything to me at the time.
00:33I have no idea.
00:35So I woke up,
00:36I didn't know where I was.
00:37I had pain in my chest.
00:38I ran to the owners of the club,

00:43And
00:45I think they didn't want the publicity,
00:47you know, to call the police or whatever,
00:49and I was bleeding a little bit,
00:50a big knot on the back of my head.
00:52I had a little cut lip.
00:53I mean, it wasn't badly hurt.

00:01Alcala is one of those
00:03strange but not uncommon serial killers
00:05who has a high IQ,
00:06is fairly good-looking by objective standards.
00:10In fact, Alcala appears to be a person
00:13who could have
00:14achieved many of his sexual desires
00:17without committing a homicide.
00:20And that makes him somewhat mystifying
00:22as serial killers go.
00:25But for some reason,
00:26there's something very wrong in their minds
00:28and that they then
00:30get involved with women and then
00:32have that sexual relationship
00:33and then end up killing.
00:34It's one of those psychological defects
00:36that exist in certain people.
00:41Even though he'd done this
00:43violent thing to me,
00:45and I warned other people to stay away from him.
00:48He was so charismatic
00:51and very good-looking.
00:53And so easily believed
